After a Fashion - a short book review
After a Fashion is a historical fiction novel that follows the story of Harriet Peabody, a young lady struggling to make ends meet. After losing her job, she's given an opportunity to work for a Mr. Oliver Addleshaw. She reluctantly agrees to work for him for a large sum of money. Their great disdain for each other quickly dissolves, and…the rest is history.
Pros:
Cons:
Pros:
- The ending was completely unexpected! I liked that I had no idea what was coming until it happened.
- After a Fashion is completely clean and has no questionable content.
- Olivier's character development. He starts out as quite the spoiled, rich, bratty type, and by the end is more aware and compassionate towards the less fortunate.
Cons:
- The main character, Miss Harriet Peabody, was not very likable for the first part of the book. She was portrayed as somewhat prideful, and I grew tired of her sassy replies to everything people said to her.
- The emphasis on outward appearance. Perhaps I should have known better. The title does include the word fashion, after all. There was a good bit of talk about how attractive Harriet and Oliver were, and we all know that looks shouldn't matter.
- There were several parts of the book that just weren't believable. There were also quite a few cheesy scenarios. I felt as if the author was trying too hard to make it humorous.
